| Collaborations:
Crystal Village// a duo of Gregg and Ben Bracken exploring the darker side of the Fourth Dimension. They use cymbals, glass, tapes, contact mics, water and other sound sources to chanel the Village, the Crystal Village. They are working on an edit of several live performances, which will eventually be released. A studio record is in progress with a tour to follow. They have performed with like minded travelers Metal Rougé, Burning Star Core and John Wiese, and have a date with Pocahaunted at the Fractal Mind Gaze Hut.
Mills
College Contemporary Performance Ensemble w/ Fred Frith//
Gregg's compositions were performed on April 2nd in the Mills College
Concert Hall. Tendrils In Vigne
released on one-sided LP on the Rootstrata label. Gregg translated,
scored and conducted one of his electronic compositions acoustically
for the 25 person Contemporary Performance Ensemble featuring Fred
Frith on violin.
The piece was originally composed on computer and later translated
for the CPE to perform acoustically. Not only am I attempting to
translate the piece for CPE, but I am also interested in translating
my composition and performance style. My electronic pieces (for
the most part) are composed as real-time or live mixes that are
recorded as they occur.
Technical
Breakdown Group Sound-Art Exhibition//Gregg
composed a piece for a sound sculpture installed in the streets
of Copenhagen, Denmark. Kowalsky used recordings he made of a broken
floor heater. The piece has a raga quality to it as the floor heater
begins to resemble a tanpura. Works from Brandan Labelle, Jacob
Kirkegaard, Gregg Kowalsky and others.
The exhibition presents 30 works by sound artists from 10 countries.
Every work reflects on what a technical breakdown could be.
Automorphosis//Gregg's composition Tendrils
(extended edit) was used in the feature documentary film by
Harrod Blank.
Live Scores Vol. 1: Derek Jarman//Gregg
currated the event matching 6 ensembles to 6 of
Jarman's short, super-8 films. The ensembles composed and performed
their score to the film live.
Jacob Kirkegaard and Gregg Kowalsky// Solo and Duo Sets
performed at the Koln Sound Art Festival sponsored by WDR Radio
(Koln, Germany).
With their first performance together, Jacob and Gregg wish
to explore the density of energy, heat (from nuclear energy, as
well as from the natural air), the investigation of warm(th) and
cold, as well as natural energy versus artificial conduction. Their
explorations into the contradiction of natural versus artificial
will be illustrated in their melding of these sonic
textures and landscapes. Kowalsky´s thick, dense sounds from
South Florida’s Everglades weaving into Jacob’s recordings
from nuclear power plants should make for a set of opaque scenery.
